Are smoke alarms mandatory in rental properties?
Yes. Since 1 October 2015 (England), landlords must install at least one smoke alarm on every storey of a rental property and a heat alarm in the kitchen. Since October 2022, landlords must also repair or replace alarms that don't work.
Do smoke alarms need to be interlinked?
For new builds and major renovations, Building Regulations require interlinked alarms (LD2 standard). For existing rental properties, standalone alarms are acceptable under the 2015 regulations, but interlinked is strongly recommended.
